I grew up with a life filled with strange coincidences and synchronicities, but not until I was in my mid 40’s did I begin seeing 1111 often and in every form possible - 11:11, $11.11, on license plates, receipt and invoice numbers, telephone numbers, and addresses. I saw it so often that it felt like an ominous forewarning and I convinced myself that I was going to die when the odometer on my new car reached 1111. I did not. Although relieved, it did not reduce my paranoia about the frequent sightings.

My youngest sister, Mac, was visiting one evening and asked me if I ever saw 1111, and I thought she was partaking in a cruel joke conceived by my husband (at the time) and daughter. They both knew how disturbed and obsessed I was with these odd 1111 manifestations. Mac assured me that I was not alone and asked me to Google “1111” and I was astounded at how many results came up and how many different meanings were attributed to this phenomenon. I’ve since discovered that many of my family members, including my daughter, sisters, nieces, and nephew often have 1111 sightings. Seeing it is one thing, but seeing it and knowing that you've just gotten a wink from the Universe is something else. We have since concluded that the universe is preparing us for an important message and it’s saying, “Get ready and pay attention!”

After my sister left that evening, though, I was alone in the living room when my cat, Tiger, started jumping from sofa, to love-seat, to coffee table, and back again, frantically caterwauling at the empty rocking chair. It freaked me out, especially so soon after we had the 1111 conversation, so I called my sister to tell her about it. She chuckled and said that she must have left a “friend” behind, and that wasn’t the first time it had happened. She went into detail about spiritual experiences she had had, including the one with the spirit that stayed behind temporarily in my living room. Since then, we have had many conversations about the spirit world, and she has opened my eyes and I’ve remembered a time when I was very young and in touch with an inner spirit that guided me and allowed me to sense things in a very special way. Over the years, I lost touch with that inner spirit, but as my relationship with my sister deepened, it slowly returned, and I began my journey back to spiritual awareness. I have so far to go, but one thing I’m certain of, is that ART is the path that always leads me there.

I love your comment, M - so profound and perfect timing. That's exactly how the universe works. I was just talking to someone this morning who said she was hesitant to meditate because she thought she might "see" something scary (even though she has meditated before with good experiences). I hope she reads your comment and if she does see something scary, I hope she'll be able to see it with different eyes and an open heart and embrace it with both arms!

This is such a great topic for a first blog post! You touched upon something that I feel is so very important: Keeping in touch with that inner spirit. So many people lose that inner spirit they had as children, as if it's part of growing up. I've been asked over and over why I'm not afraid of the monster hiding in the closet. It's because I never learned to pretend it's not there. Maybe it's hiding in my closet because it's scared. I don't ignore it. I embrace it with both arms.
